To reach the Vesuvius from Sorrento, take the Circumvesuviana train from Sorrento to Pompeii-Villa dei Misteri station from where you reach the bus stop that leads to the summit of Vesuvius (reach it is really easy: it is located about 200 meters from the station, opposite the tourist office) . The area around Vesuvius was declared a National Park in 1995. The summit of Vesuvius is open to visitors and there is a network of paths around the mountain that you can go.
