Pompei and Ercolano

Pompei and Ercolano can be considered one of the most important testimonies and better preserve of Roman civilization over 2000 years ago. They are reached from Sorrento by the Circumvesuviana train that leaves every 40 minutes. The two cities were buried during the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, only to be rediscovered with the first excavations of 1738, commissioned by King Charles of Bourbon. While Pompeii was covered by a thick blanket of ash and lapilli about 6-7 meters, Herculaneum was completely buried by a river of molten lava that has transfixed the majority of the objects making them arrive intact to the present day. Walking through the ruins is definitely a unique experience; is like taking a trip back in time by breathing the atmosphere of ancient life, the public and especially private life.
